The Ultimate Guide to Caring for White Lipped Pythons

White lipped python, with their iridescent scales and dynamic personalities, stand out as one of the most striking reptiles in the herpetological community. Native to the lush, dense forests of Papua New Guinea and the islands within the Torres Strait, these medium-sized constrictors offer a unique blend of beauty and challenge that has captivated enthusiasts worldwide. This guide delves deep into the world of white lipped pythons, covering everything from their natural habitat and care needs to purchasing advice and price considerations.

Overview of White Lipped Pythons

Description
The white lipped python (Python leiopython albertisii), also known as D’Albertis python (refer to Wikipedia for more information), is a species renowned for its distinct appearance. The most striking feature is their glossy scales, which can shimmer in shades from shiny black to a brownish violet under light. The snake’s name derives from its bright white upper and lower labial scales, providing a stark contrast to its darker body color. Adult white lipped pythons can reach lengths of 6 to 7 feet, making them a medium-sized python.

Natural Habitat
In the wild, white lipped pythons thrive in a semi-arboreal lifestyle within rainforests. They are adept climbers and often seek out basking spots in trees to regulate their body temperature. These pythons utilize their heat-sensitive pits located around the mouth to detect and locate prey in the dense foliage, showcasing their adaptation to their environment.

Behavior and Temperament
White lipped pythons have earned a reputation for being quick-tempered or aggressive. However, with regular handling and proper care, they can become more accustomed to human interaction, though they remain one of the more challenging species to handle due to their defensive nature.

Care Guide for White Lipped Pythons

Basic Requirements
Creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat is crucial for the wellbeing of a white lipped python. An enclosure for an adult should be at least 4 feet in length but larger is better to accommodate their semi-arboreal lifestyle. Temperature gradients from 75°F (24°C) on the cool side to 90°F (32°C) for basking spots, along with a humidity level of 60-80%, are essential for their health. Proper lighting should also be installed to simulate natural daylight cycles.

Feeding Guidelines
White lipped pythons are carnivorous, primarily preying on rodents and birds in the wild. In captivity, a diet of mice or rats, appropriately sized to the python’s girth, is recommended. Baby white lipped pythons should be fed once every 5-7 days, while adults can be fed less frequently, typically once every 10-14 days.

Health and Wellness
Regular health checks are crucial to identifying and preventing common issues such as respiratory infections, mites, or scale rot. Providing a clean, stress-free environment and a balanced diet are key preventive measures. Always consult with a veterinarian experienced in reptile care for any health concerns.

Purchasing and Price Information

Where to Buy White Lipped Pythons
Finding a reputable breeder is essential when looking to buy a white lipped python. Websites like The Reptarium offer valuable resources for potential buyers. For those interested in unique morphs, exploring options such as albino or black white lipped pythons can be fascinating.

Price Range
The cost of a white lipped python can vary significantly depending on factors such as age, size, and morph. Prices can range from approximately $200 for a basic morph to over $1,000 for rarer varieties. When considering the purchase, factor in the cost of the python’s enclosure, diet, and veterinary care as well.

Choosing the Right Python
When selecting a white lipped python, observe its behavior, body condition, and any signs of illness. Purchasing from a respected breeder or seller who can provide detailed information about the snake’s origin, age, and health status is advisable. For those interested in specific morphs, conducting thorough research and comparing options from different sellers is beneficial.

Advanced Topics

Breeding White Lipped Pythons
Breeding these pythons requires understanding their sexual maturity, which typically occurs around 2-3 years of age for females and slightly earlier for males. An understanding of the breeding cycle and creating the right environmental conditions is necessary for successful breeding efforts.

Morphs and Variations
The diversity among white lipped pythons is part of what makes them so appealing. Morphs like the black white lipped python or the rare albino offer enthusiasts the chance to keep a truly unique specimen. Each morph presents its own set of care requirements and price points.
