The Ultimate Guide to Monkey Tailed Skinks: Comprehensive Insights into Care, Costs, and Purchasing

Monkey tailed skink, scientifically known as Corucia zebrata and commonly referred to as Solomon Islands skinks or prehensile-tailed skinks, are fascinating creatures that have captured the interest of exotic pet enthusiasts worldwide. With their distinctive prehensile tails, vibrant green color, and sociable nature, these skinks make both intriguing and challenging pets. This guide provides an in-depth look at everything you need to know about monkey tailed skinks, from care requirements to purchasing tips.

Understanding Monkey Tailed Skinks

Physical and Behavioral Traits

Monkey tailed skinks are native to the rainforests of the Solomon Islands. They are the largest known species of skink, with adults reaching up to 32 inches in length, including their tail. These skinks are arboreal (tree-dwelling), primarily nocturnal, and are known for their strong prehensile tail which acts like a fifth limb, aiding in climbing and holding onto branches.

Behaviorally, monkey tailed skinks are quite social compared to other reptiles. They can often be found in small groups in the wild and have been known to exhibit communal behaviors, such as sharing food and caring for young collectively.

Insights into Their Natural Habitat and Adaptation to Captivity

In their natural habitat, monkey tailed skinks dwell in dense forest canopies where humidity levels are high and temperatures are consistent. When adapting these skinks to captivity, it is crucial to mimic this environment to ensure their health and well-being. This includes maintaining high humidity, consistent temperatures, and providing plenty of vertical space for climbing.

Comprehensive Care Guide for Monkey Tailed Skinks

Essential Care Requirements

Diet: Monkey tailed skinks are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of leaves, fruits, and flowers. In captivity, their diet should consist of dark leafy greens, squash, and occasional fruits like mango and papaya to mimic their natural diet.

Habitat Setup: An ideal enclosure for a monkey tailed skink should be tall and spacious, with a focus on vertical space to encourage climbing. Essential elements of the habitat include:

  • Substrate: A mixture of peat moss and coconut fiber, which holds moisture well and supports high humidity.
  • Temperature and Humidity: Daytime temperatures should range from 75-85°F with a basking spot of about 95°F. Night temperatures can drop to around 70°F. Humidity should be maintained between 70% and 80%.
  • Plants and Branches: Live plants not only enhance humidity but also provide hiding spots and climbing opportunities. Sturdy branches should be provided for climbing and basking.

Health Management

Common health issues in monkey tailed skinks include respiratory infections due to inadequate humidity and metabolic bone disease from insufficient UVB lighting. Regular veterinary check-ups and a well-maintained habitat can prevent most of these issues.
