The Ultimate Kenyan Sand Boa Buyer’s Guide: Care, Varieties, and Purchase Tips

Kenyan Sand Boas are among the most fascinating and manageable pet snakes for reptile enthusiasts. Their docile nature, modest size, and unique appearance make them a popular choice. If you’re considering a Kenyan Sand Boa for sale, understanding their care requirements, the different varieties available, and the purchasing process is crucial for creating a healthy and happy environment for your new pet.

Kenyan Sand Boa Basics

What is a Kenyan Sand Boa?

The Kenyan Sand Boa (Eryx colubrinus loveridgei) is a small, non-venomous snake native to Eastern Africa. It’s distinguished by its stout body, small size (typically 15-24 inches in length for males and up to 36 inches for females), and its distinctive burying behavior, spending much of its time under sand or substrate. Unlike many other snake species, Kenyan Sand Boas are relatively easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for beginner and experienced reptile keepers alike.

Why Choose a Kenyan Sand Boa?

Kenyan Sand Boas are known for their calm demeanor and tolerance of handling, which can make them fantastic pets. Their care regime is straightforward, they do not require large enclosures, and they exhibit fascinating behaviors. Additionally, with a lifespan of up to 20 years, they can be long-term companions.

Detailed Care Guide

Kenyan Sand Boa Care Guide

Proper care is essential for keeping your Kenyan Sand Boa healthy. This includes setting up an appropriate habitat, maintaining the right temperature and humidity levels, and providing a suitable diet.

Creating the Perfect Habitat

A 20-gallon long aquarium is typically sufficient for a single adult Kenyan Sand Boa, with a secure lid to prevent escapes. The substrate should be loose and deep enough to allow your boa to burrow, with aspen shavings being a popular choice. Temperature gradients should range from 75°F on the cool side to 95°F on the warm side, with a basking spot of around 90°F. Humidity should be kept relatively low, around 30-50%.

For detailed habitat setups, MorphMarket and ReptMart offer great resources and products.

Kenyan Sand Boa Diet

Kenyan Sand Boas primarily feed on small rodents. Juveniles can eat pinky mice, while adults should be fed larger mice or even small rats, depending on their size. Feeding once a week is generally recommended, though feeding schedules may vary based on the snake’s age and health.

Health and Lifespan

With proper care, Kenyan Sand Boas can live up to 20 years. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian experienced with reptiles are crucial to catch any potential health issues early. It’s also important to monitor their feeding habits, weight, and behavior for any signs of distress or illness.

Varieties of Kenyan Sand Boas

Understanding Different Types

There are several morphs of Kenyan Sand Boas available, including the Anery Kenyan Sand Boa, which lacks red pigmentation, the Albino Kenyan Sand Boa, which lacks melanin, and the Snow Kenyan Sand Boa, a combination of the Anery and Albino traits.

Choosing Your Kenyan Sand Boa

When selecting a Kenyan Sand Boa, consider the snake’s health, temperament, and the reputation of the breeder or seller. MorphMarket and ReptMart are excellent places to start your search for a Kenyan Sand Boa for sale.

Purchase and Price Guide

Where to Find Kenyan Sand Boas for Sale

Reputable breeders, online marketplaces like MorphMarket, and specialized reptile stores are the best places to find healthy Kenyan Sand Boas. Always research a seller’s reputation and ask for health records before making a purchase.

Kenyan Sand Boa Price Range

Prices for Kenyan Sand Boas can vary widely based on size, age, color morph, and rarity, ranging from $100 to over $500. Remember to factor in the cost of the enclosure, substrate, heating elements, and ongoing food and care expenses.

After Purchase Care

First Steps After Bringing Your Boa Home

Once you bring your Kenyan Sand Boa home, allow it to acclimate to its new environment for a week before handling it regularly. This adjustment period is crucial for reducing stress and promoting a healthy appetite.

Ongoing Care and Support

Regular handling can help tame your Kenyan Sand Boa, but always be gentle and supportive. Monitor its health, habitat conditions, and diet closely, adjusting as needed to ensure your snake thrives.

Q: How often should I feed my Kenyan Sand Boa?
A: Feeding schedules depend on the snake’s size and age, but typically, juveniles should be fed weekly and adults every other week.

Q: What’s the difference between an Anery and an Albino Kenyan Sand Boa?
